Understanding Flags

Oxford Sailing Club House

This article further builds on our understanding of dinghy racing at Oxford Sailing Club.

The image opposite explains the sequencing of the flags at the start of a typical race. These flags are usually either displayed on the starting hut or starting boat (Skippy).

Each fleet (i.e. group of similar dinghies) has a fleet flag and each fleet will get 6 minutes warning before their race starts.

When your fleet flag goes up, it is a signal that that fleet will start in 6 minutes time. The fleet flag comes down to signal the start for all boats in that fleet.
